Diesel Boy's Upcoming 7 inch, 'Tapes / Punk Rock Minivan'

2023 was a landmark year for Diesel Boy. After more than two decades away from the spotlight, the California skate punk quartet made a powerful comeback with their new album, "Gets Old," receiving the best reviews of their career. The band also hit the road for the first time in decades, performing in both Europe and the US, and ending the year with a sold-out show in their current hometown of Seattle alongside old friends MxPx. Despite the toll of time, their live shows remain as energetic as ever.

"Is it a reunion if no one cared we were gone or that we’re back?" quips singer/guitarist Diesel Dave on “Lost Decade,” the lead track from "Gets Old." But fans are clearly thrilled about the band’s return. The excitement has reinvigorated Diesel Boy's members: founders Diesel Dave and Greg Hensley (bass), Jack Miller (guitar), and Christopher Thomas (drums). Miller also moonlights as The Punk Historian on YouTube, while Thomas drums for indie rock veterans Mansions.

Balancing grown-up jobs, raising families, and the rigors of middle age, the band still has much to celebrate in 2024. Diesel Boy will be playing dates across North America, including summer festivals like Pouzza, Red Bridge, and Camp Punksylvania. Additionally, they will release a seven-inch record on SBAM featuring two new songs: “Tapes,” a nostalgic ode to cassettes, and “Punk Rock Minivan,” a playful take on a family road trip to punk rock landmarks.

Formed in California’s wine country in 1993, Diesel Boy made four records for Fat Wreck Chords imprint Honest Don’s in the ‘90s and 2000s, and toured globally before taking a long hiatus. During their break, their music continued to gain streams, leading to renewed interest and ultimately their comeback. Humbled by enthusiastic fan responses, Diesel Boy is eager to make their mark once again.

Singer Dave Lake took a moment to talk about the two new songs on the 7 inch stating the following.

"Tapes": "The song is a love letter to cassettes, my first musical love. What they lacked in fidelity, they made up for in portability and affordability. The Walkman was the iPhone of its day and there was nothing cooler than being able to grab a pair of headphones and take your Duran Duran tape anywhere you wanted. And mixtapes will always be infinitely more romantic than a playlist."

"Punk Rock Minivan": "This is me imagining a road trip with my kids to see all the important punk rock sights across the country. But I don’t own a minivan and my kids don’t care about punk rock. I wish the song had more verses so we could have made a pitstop in Chicago to see the Fireside Bowl and Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio. The song is loosely inspired by Chuck Klosterman’s book “Killing Yourself to Live.”"
