THE DROWNS and THE LAST GANG and their new 7” split! The 7”, available NOW in 3 different versions, is now available on the Pirates Press Records webstore.
Two of the premiere upcoming West Coast punk rock bands actively touring and recording, The Drowns and The Last Gang (from Seattle and Los Angeles, respectively), are popular fan-favorites reputed for their energetic live performances, their hard rocking songs, as well as their socio-politically conscious lyrics. They are also something of a mutual admiration society!
"We’ve been friends with The Last Gang for years and we love their music just as much as we love them as people," says The Drowns co-frontman Rev.
Although both bands reside on the same coast of the USA, each one maintains a vigorous touring schedule, so it follows that it was while travelling overseas that the idea to release a split germinated. "We were touring Europe together when we all agreed that a split would just make sense," continues Rev. "And we couldn’t be more stoked with how it came out!”
Each band contributed a new track to this split. In this case, The Drowns opted for a celebratory tone, offering the song “Subculture Rock 'N Roll,” while The Last Gang veered into darker territory, contributing the track “Pleaser.”
"'Subculture Rock 'N Roll’ is our tribute to the music we love, and the modern sounds that have been coming around the last few years from other peers of ours. It’s just straight up, no-filter rock 'n roll,” says Rev.
The Last Gang explains that "Pleaser" "explores the symbiotic relationship between our culture’s obsession with impossible beauty expectations and the audience who binges on that flawless delusion, that unattainable dream. When we’re left without a filter and followers can’t fill in for self-worth, we come out of this illusion alone and feeling empty."
About the recording process, the band states, "We recorded the track on a rainy February day at Buzzbomb Studios in Orange, CA with Paul Minor, and it is the first song we wrote and recorded with our new drummer, Sam.”
Each song makes for a solid entry point into the catalogs of two of the most exciting contemporary punk bands on the scene today, and they are sure to please longtime fans as well! As usual, Pirates Press Records offers multiple variants on colored vinyl, and the jacket features fantastic cover art by renowned punk rock tattoo artist Hannah Blu!
The Drowns are coming off a club show appearance at Punk Rock Bowling, where they shared the stage with the likes of The Chisel and The Beltones. They will soon be heading to Europe in support of their most recent releases including this split, their previous split with Germany's Plizzken, and 2022's EP “Lunatics,” which injected glam rock energy into the band's anthemic punk sound.
The Last Gang are triumphantly on the final leg of a massive full US tour. Notably, both bands are featured this July on the bill at the Tacoma, WA date on NOFX's Punk in Drublic Festival Farewell Tour. It will be a chance for these friends who have travelled the world with one another to re-connect closer to home and celebrate the music they have made together!
